Once we got Rocky, he quickly became our pride and joy. He is a thirteen pound Yorkie – who is extremely gentle, affectionate and passive. He was one of six siblings, and -while double the size of his brothers and sisters - he spent much of his youngest months on his back allowing his siblings to climb all over him.
Early on Rocky showed signs of dry skin and allergies, and was often itching to the point of breaking his skin. This started our quest to relieve him of allergens that might cause him discomfort. It was interesting to learn that rising allergies in humans has been paralleled by rising allergies in pets. We learned about dog foods – how many of them include poor quality ingredients that are not fit for human consumption, and how the high temperatures used to cook dry dog food kill most of the nutrients. We wanted to include whole foods in Rocky’s diet – including fruits, vegetables, grains, meat and fish – and began buying organic for him. We now eat organic as well! Rocky does not eat dog food, we home cook for him, following holistic nutritional guidelines.
We looked at holistic cures and treatments to minimize Rocky’s exposure to chemicals. We live in a world full of products containing chemicals to make our lives more convenient. As a result, cancer has increased in both humans and pets.
We were always on the lookout for clothing for Rocky, but found that most dog clothing was of poor quality, and high priced. That led to our decision to create a line of dog clothing. When we researched textiles, we were shocked to learn that dangerous chemicals were used to dye and finish most of the fabrics that we wear each day. We couldn’t think of putting toxic clothing on Rocky, or onto other dogs. Our research found that the most stringent standard for keeping toxins out of apparel dyes is in Germany, and called Oeko-tex 100. We have used dyes following this standard in most of our clothing.
Because we are baby boomers, retro has always appealed to us. Therefore, the design of our garments is retro-inspired. In addition, we have been disappointed numerous times with dog clothing that shrinks excessively after the first wash so that it no longer fits Rocky. To avoid this, we have pre-shrunk fabrics that we have designed, where we were able to. Garments made from purchased fabrics have been cut larger to account for shrinkage. Our line is high end, but it is also high quality – non-toxic, Made in USA, durable, and can withstand years of washing without shrinking. Classic garments that last . . .
Natural and fashionable is our motto for Rocky, and for your dog!!
Thanks to Our Friends
Our friends have been extremely supportive and helpful as we have designed and produced our line. Many thanks!
